Commonly referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe and highly effective mild sedative, even for children. The colorless, odorless gas is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. You breathe normally and the effects of nitrous oxide are felt within minutes. While it likely won’t make you laugh, nitrous oxide slows down your nervous system, so you’ll feel less inhibited and may experience euphoria or lightheadedness. After your procedure is complete, the nitrous oxide is turned off, the side effects wear off quickly and you breathe in pure oxygen for a few minutes. Although you may have little memory about your procedure, nitrous oxide isn’t associated with any lingering side effects, so you can drive yourself home.
Oral sedation is a good option for mild to moderate levels of dental fear. Oral sedatives called benzodiazepines work by decreasing activity in the parts of your brain that control fear and anxiety. It’s common to take one pill an hour before a procedure, although some patients also take a pill the night before to reduce worrying about treatment. During your procedure, we monitor all your vitals to ensure your safety. Although you’re awake, you may forget parts of the procedure or the entire experience due to amnesic effects of the drug. Because sedatives can impair your judgment and reaction times and the effects can linger, a designated person needs to drive you to and from our office.
